October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Posted

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, making it a good time to remind the women in our community about the importance of breast cancer screening.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, but finding it early can make a major difference. Mammography can detect breast cancer before a lump can be felt or other symptoms develop, when treatment is often most effective.

For women at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening mammograms every two years from ages 40 through 74. Some women may need to begin screening earlier or be screened more frequently because of their family history, previous breast problems, genetic risk, or other factors. This is why it is important to discuss your personal risk and screening schedule with your healthcare provider.

Women should also pay attention to changes in their breasts. A new lump, nipple discharge, skin changes, nipple retraction, or a noticeable change in the size or shape of a breast should be evaluated, even if your most recent mammogram was normal.

Fortunately, breast cancer screening is available right here in our community. Bradley County Medical Center offers mammography through its Radiology Department. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 870-226-4165. Having this technology available locally means women do not have to travel far to take an important step in protecting their health.

If you are due—or overdue—for your mammogram, consider making October the month you get it scheduled. A few minutes of your time could have a lasting impact on your health.

We also invite everyone in our community to join us for our Breast Cancer Festival, “Pink in the Park,” on October 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m at Warren City Park. Come out, show your support, help us raise awareness, and celebrate the women and families in our community affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer awareness is important, but awareness should lead to action. Talk with your healthcare provider, know your risk, and stay up to date on recommended screening.

If you have questions, come see us at 304 E Central in Warren.  Call (870) 226-8636 for an appointment—walk-ins are always welcome.
