The Bradley County Quorum Court met Monday, Oct. 20, with two members absent. After approving the minutes from the September meeting, the court opened the floor for public comments.

Leeanna Ashcraft, chief operating officer of Bradley County Medical Center, presented each member with a copy of the hospital’s Community Health Needs Assessment. She also recognized the BCMC laboratory, noting that a state CLIA inspector commended it as one of the cleanest and best organized in Arkansas.

Two-time breast cancer survivor Arletta Allen presented the court with a “Paint Arkansas Pink” sign from UAMS Health in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign aims to increase public awareness of breast cancer.

It was noted that Kenny Ferguson, a Bradley County resident, attended the meeting to observe. He is considering running for the quorum court seat currently held by Alton Richard.

The court approved the treasurer’s and sheriff’s reports.

County Judge Klay McKinney reported that work has begun on the county’s 2026 budget. Preliminary figures show that no pay raises for county employees are expected and no new positions will be posted. McKinney said rising costs for utilities and health insurance, along with slow tax collections, have strained county finances.

“The tax collection is slow this year,” McKinney said. “Everyone seems to be low on funds.”

He added that preparations continue for the county jail vote, set for Nov. 18, and that he has received significant public support for the proposal. All six county polling sites will be open for the election.

After approving renewals of several ordinances, the meeting was adjourned.

The next quorum court meeting is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m.
